The Atlantic coast of the Poitou- Charentes Region is surrounded by four beautiful and unique little islands. The isle of Ré, the white one, the isle of Aix, the authentic one, the smallest of them is the isle Madam and the isle of Oléron is the shinning one. The isles of Ré and Oléron are the bigger ones and both of them are well connected to the French coasts by a bridge. The bike path that you will find here are very well prepared.
Welcome to the ‘Cote de la Lumière’ because of the bright shining light and the ‘Cote de la Beaute’ because of the beauty. The most important town within the department is La Rochelle, situated deep into the bay and still today protected by the ancient fortresses of the 18th century.
Another positive aspect of the region is its mild climate on the Atlantic Ocean with about 2.600 hours of sun per year. The numerous marsh lands along the cost and on the islands are home of lots of different bird species and nearly everywhere you can find traces of the historic rivalry between the French and the English kingdom. And finally this bike tour is also a trip to and through the high quality of French cooking. As we always use to say: Living like god in France.
Route
Individual arrival. Your accommodation is in a nice hotel in the heart of the town center. Take the time to enjoy the city.
Situated North from La Rochelle, the Baie de l’Aiguillon is a graceful link between continent and ocean. Your itinerary, along the white coast is easy and beautiful. Baie de l’Aiguillon is famous for its mussel farms. You will have the opportunity to visit one of them: the interesting Maison de la Myticulture.
You leave La Rochelle towards south on a pleasant cycling path along the coast. Enjoy the wonderful sceneries from Chatelaillon Plage. After a little walk in the charming town center and its tiny streets, why not swimming or lying on the beach. Back to La Rochelle by small country roads and De Buzay’ Castle.
Cross the impressive bridge to reach the island: Ile de Ré. Discover the lively fisherman’s village called Rivedoux then La Flotte with their colourful markets. Cycle along charming white villages on the coast line with many possibilities to stop for a swim on the way.
It’s time to leave La Rochelle for another great town: Rochefort, where, in 1666, Louis XIV chose to settle a powerful naval arsenal on the Atlantic. Today, you ride along the coast you will see former prison Fort Boyard, and the island Ile d’Oléron.
Idyllic cycling on the way from Rochefort to your next accommodation in Bourcefranc or La Tremblade/Ronce les Bains (depending on your choice of
by your choice of category). Possibility in Marennes - center of oyster production, surrounded by a tranquil nature reserve, which is home to many migratory birds and continue your journey afterwards.
Wonderful cycle path first through a nature reserve, nesting place for many bird species and finally through the extensive pine forests with wonderful views of the sea. Make sure you bring your swimwear on your bike on this day! The last section of the cycle path leads along the rocky coast to the hotel in Royan.
Use the included bus transfer at 9 am after breakfast to get back to La Rochelle. Individual departure or extend your stay in La Rochelle.

The nearest international airport is in BORDEAUX
From Bordeaux airport, there is a shuttle to Bordeaux train station (about € 10,- about 30min). From Bordeaux Saint Jean train station there are connections to " La Rochelle Ville " train station (approx. 35,00 € - 2h20)
Arrival by car
Parking: In Cat. A you can use the hotel own parking garage approx. for € 15,- /day. In Cat. B you need to use the public parking lots next to your starting hotel. This parking lots will cost as well approx. € 15,- /day.
Arrival by train
Train station: La Rochelle
From the train station in La Rochelle you can use the taxi for approx. € 10,- to get to the hotel or you can walk 20 minutes. The hotels are situated in the city center (La Rochelle old port).
