East of Sicily

Baroque cities and the ancient Magna Graecia

Touring map

Route

The tour is quite easy. Most of it runs on level roads, with a few short legs uphill, on Sicily you will find not cycling paths. For most of the tour cyclists will be riding on secondary roads, with reduced car traffic. Very good athletic skills are not requested, still participants should be at least well-trained. On the first, second and fifth stage it is possible to choose, according to one’s athletic preparation, among two alternative paths, different from each other as for length and slope steepness.

Indivdiual arrival.

After having admired the wealth of historical remains of Palazzolo Acreide, cyclists starts pedalling through the hyblean territory, that will catch their eye with the spectacular beauty of dry, wild landscapes alternating with green fields and large gardens planted with trees. Typical of this territory the dry-stacked limestone walls, used to separate one plot of land from another since the arabic domination. This stage includes a 3 km long slope.

Before leaving Modica it is worth stopping for a taste of the famous and spicy red pepper flavoured Modica chocolate. Then, riding on a gentle descent following the border of an ancient limestone querry, cyclists will get to Scicli, a true pearl of elegance set into the rural Sicilian territory, homeland to unforgettable gastronomic delicacies. From here, the stage keeps going down towards the coast and reaches Pozzallo.

During the whole stage cyclotourists will ride on a level road. They will be riding along the border of the longarini and cuba morasses (Wildlife reserves). Here, big migrating birds, such as pink flamingoes and herons, use to stop and rest during their jurney from Africa to the Northern Europe. Then cyclists will ride even more South, to get to the same latitude as Tunisi. Actually, l’Isola delle Correnti, the currents’ island, is the most southern edge of Sicily, facing the fascinating mixing of the Mediterranean waves with the ones of the Ionic sea. Then Portopalo di Capo Passero, the most southern European town, and finally a charming marine village: Marzamemi. In this unique little town the enchanting atmosphere of the seaside gets combined with the pleasure of tasting the delicious fishermen gastronomy. The stage ends at the marvellous San Lorenzo beach.

More level road: this stage will drive cyclotourists Northwards along the coast to enter the wild park of Vendicari. On the beaches of this wildlife park sea tortoises (Caretta caretta) keep laying their eggs undisturbed. The protected waters of the bay teem with multicoloured fish. From here cyclists will climb up to Noto, stony garden, the real Italian capital of Baroque architecture.

Still on a level road. The tour continues along the coast, proceeding Northwards to get stright to Syracuse. Once, this charming town was the capital of the Magna Graecia. Nowadays it is famous for the surprising naturalness by which, among modern streets and buildings, one can see extraordinary and unexpected remains of the classical Greek and Roman periods. The Neapolis Archaeological Park is just amazing. You will be ravished by the ancient charm of the Greek Theater, the Dionisio Ear and the Roman amphitheatre. Ortygia island, then, will catch your eyes with its charming narrow roads and the imposing Baroque buildings. It is the ideal place for tasting, just by the seashore,  a delightful cannolo di ricotta or a cool granita di mandorla, depending on the season.
